Painting the exterior of a home is typically a large job that requires planning, proper techniques, and durable products to ensure that the paint job will withstand the harsh elements that our Northeast Ohio climate can bring. We start by trimming trees and shrubs away from the house to give us room to work. It is also important to keep landscaping far enough from the house that the siding can dry thoroughly after rain. When landscaping is too close to the home, the boards can not dry out completely, which can lead to boards rotting. If there is an extensive amount of trimming that needs to be done, we sometimes ask customers to hire a landscaping service to complete this task. We scrape all loose and peeling paint away from the surfaces that are being painted, as long as the house was built in the year 1978 or after. We do not disturb peeling paint on pre-1978 houses due to lead based paint concerns, unless the areas in question are smaller than 20 square feet, in which cases the EPA's "RRP" rules do not apply. We also caulk any cracks or seams as needed. We use many techniques to complete exterior projects, including spraying, brushing, and rolling. Different houses call for different techniques, and we know how to complete an exterior project in the most efficient way possible. Our usual products for exteriors include Sherwin-Williams Resilience, Sherwin-Williams Duration, and Sherwin-Williams Woodscapes solid stain. We also use Woodscapes on fences, and we use Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck when staining decks and steps. If done properly, your exterior repaint will last you 5 - 11 years depending on the substrate, the condition of the substrate, and the products that we are able to use.
