How to Paint Your Room Like A Pro

February 27, 2023

There’s a difference between painting a room and painting a room really well. If you’re looking to paint your room by yourself, you gotta learn and think like the masters of the craft. Painting is not just about buying paint, grabbing your roller, and putting on the first coat. Not so fast! Do not miss the crucial first few steps! Here are some tips on how to paint like a pro!

  • Clean and Prep

Don’t skip the first step! It may be a boring task but you’d be amazed how much grime can get stuck in a fresh coat of paint.

Clean the walls first b removing any dust, dirt, and grease spots with water, a little mild dishwashing detergent, and a cellulose sponge. Remove the soap residue by rinsing the walls with water then let them dry. Once they’re dry, you’ll want to fill any nail holes with spackling paste and then lightly sand.

Then, move the furniture and fixtures out of room, or away from the walls, or push them all to the center of the room. Cover the pieces with a drop cloth, or lightweight plastic sheeting, or old bed linen and do the same with the floor. Finally, remove the light switches and outlet covers and put painter’s blue tape over the area to avoid paint smudges.

  • Tape the Trim, Windows, and Doorframes

Don’t put down the painter’s tape just yet! Use it to tape the trim, windows, and doorframes. You can do this a week ahead. Remember to remove the tape immediately after painting and before the wall dries! This is so you don't peel off any paint with it.

  • Prime the Walls

A fresh coat of primer helps maximize the sheen and coverage of the paint. If you’re working with new walls, or if you’ve patched any holes before you start, you’ll also need to prime. You should also prime the walls if you’re going from a dark to a light color or vice versa. Pro tip: Primer should also be sanded before the paint goes on the wall.

  • Brush Around the Edges

Brush the hard-to-reach parts first before picking up the roller. This way, you won’t have obvious marks at the edges.

  • Paint Your Walls

After all the prep work, it’s time for the real deal! Paint your walls with your desired color using a roller brush and a paint brush. Leave the first coat to completely dry before applying another. You should at least two coats to get a richer and more vibrant color finish.

  • Clean Up

Once the work is done, remove all the painter’s tape. Then, decant the tray’s leftover paint back into the tin and remember to seal it tightly. You can use a hammer around the lid’s edges to close it firmly. Clean you tray, brushes, and roller and leave them to fully dry before putting them away.
